I wanted a LEGO table for my son that looked more like my furniture and less like a preschool, and preferably at a fraction of the cost. By making one myself from an old end table, a solid beautiful piece of furniture is exactly what I got.
First, I found an end table at a garage sale for only $5. It was solid wood, but oh my gosh was it dirty. I mean, cobweb central. I almost didn't buy it, but I knew it would be perfect. Then, it sat in my art room all summer, because I just didn't want to tackle the mess. Anyway, as the LEGO's began taking over my house, I knew I had to put on my big girl pants and fix up the table.
I began by taking off the bottom half of the table, where the missing drawer was. I had to use my mini screwdriver because of the position of the screws, which was a less than awesome experience for my knuckles.
Then, I took off the drawer section and put just the base back on.
I knew I wanted to let the wood-grain show through, so I gave it a coat of dark (almost black) stain.
I wanted to give it a little height, so that it was at just the right level for my son to play comfortably, so I added wooden craft balls to the bottom. They already had drill holes in them, so they were perfect. I stained them the same dark color.
I ordered three 10x10 baseplates from the LEGO shop online. I got a little lucky with these, because I had some LEGO points (I told you my son has lots of LEGO's, right?) that I was able to cash in, so I only paid about $8 for all three.
To make them all fit perfectly, I had to cut one of them in half using an X-Acto knife. I attached them to the top of the table with Gorilla Glue. So far, it's held up just fine. If, however, in the future it starts to loosen up and come off, I'll try something a little stronger.
Not too bad for a garage sale end table, right?
My mission has been accomplished. A lovely piece of furniture for a kids toy, for under $15.
I hope this has inspired you!

Fantastic!! We made my 4 yr old son a DIY Lego table for his b'day, but it's not as furniture-y looking as yours is...I'm jealous! Thanks for sharing it at Shine on Fridays!
Nice work! What a great idea!
This is one of those ideas where I am thinking "why didn't I think of that." Going to be moving next summer and this might be a project that gets introduced into the playroom first thing :)
