One of my most favorite things about being a blogger is connecting with authors and artists. When Dave Derrick Jr. contacted me about reviewing his third children’s book I’m the Scariest Thing in the Jungle, right away I checked out his website to learn a bit about the book and the author, then immediately wrote him back with a great big YES!
After watching the book trailer with my kids for I’m the Scariest Thing in the Jungle, we couldn’t wait to receive our copy, because of course after the teaser, my boys wanted to know-
In fact, it became quite the debate between my two younger sons, actually a very similar to the debate in the book between the little tiger and the little crocodile-
In India, the tiger is the king of the land. But the crocodile is the ruler of the water. What happens when the kids of these fearsome beasts meet? In their own version of Anything You Can Scare ,I Can Scare Better tiger cub and little croc swim, climb and joust in a witty war of words. Enjoy a head-to-head, humorous battle for bragging rights like you’ve never seen before! But will these terrible tykes discover something even scarier than them?
Don’t worry, in the end you truly do get to figure out who is indeed the scariest in the jungle, and if your children are like mine, the answer will have them in fits of giggles.
I loved the banter back and forth between these two adorably illustrated characters, so much like little human children behave. It’s quite the game of “King of the Mountain” between these two, with a bit of exaggeration on both of their parts as to their individual strengths. Although these two critters individual claims escalate to great heights, your children will learn about real traits of crocodiles and tigers and what does indeed make them dangerous creatures.
The illustrations in this book are clearly full of imagination, and sets the atmosphere for these two little animals to show up and show off their bragging rights. My kids enjoyed not only seeing the tiger and crocodile on each page, but also finding the other creatures scattered about. For example, on one page the kids spotted a chameleon with what appears to be a grin on his face, which is a bit of foreshadowing for the next pages to come.
I’m the Scariest Thing in the Jungle is one of those books that you realize could easily become your child’s most favorite stories of all time. The book that, when they grow up, they’ll want to read to their own children.
