I just finished one of the most fun projects I’ve made for my home in a while- designing and decorating custom accent pillows!
One of my favorite companies, Cutting Edge Stencils now has a sister company, Paint-A-Pillow and let me tell you, their products are fantastic. Paint-A-Pillow offers an entire stenciling kit that allows you to create your own designer accent pillows. You literally have control over everything; you pick paint colors, pattern design, even if you want a white or a natural colored pillow.
The Paint-A-Pillow kit comes with everything you need to get started:
- Stenciling frame (pat.pend.)
- Reusable pillow stencil
- 17”x17” Cotton pillow cover
- Pillow insert: linen/down alternative
- Mini roller and stencil brush
- Paint tray and stirring stick
- Illustrated instructions
- Free mini stencil and practice fabric swatch
- One free fabric paint of your choice
Stenciling used to make me so nervous, but with the easy instructions and video tutorials Paint-A-Pillow offers, you see how easy they’ve made it. I’m not an overly patient person when it comes to crafty projects, and one thing that’s great about the kit is that you have almost instant gratification. The pillows don’t take long to paint, even if you’re using multiple colors.
For my first try at painting my pillows, I chose the Paisley stencil that works in any room of my house, and also three paint colors that coordinate in each room.
Everything arrived so tidily in a box that’s great for storing your kit later. Listen, when I say they’ve included everything you may need in one kit, they really have.
The pillowcase and stencil are already on the stenciling frame. All you need to do to get started is shake and stir your paint.
Simply give your roller an even coat of paint, do a few practice rolls, and then get started.
When you’re finished rolling, gently lift your stencil off the frame.
This blue pillow was my very first attempt, and as you can see, there was no bleeding under the stencil. I’m not an expert stenciler. All I did was watch the tutorial video and jump in. I’m so happy with the results.
Once the paint was dry, I followed the instructions to heat set it (with a regular household iron).
The final step was to open the pillows and add the cases.
You may remember our outdoor bench that just received it’s own makeover? These pillows, because they’re versatile for the outdoors or indoors, are absolutely perfect. They make our front porch entrance so welcoming.
And remember this little trunk and how I had no idea if I should paint it or leave it as is? Well, you can see that I didn’t paint it. I now use it to store my photo albums and I put it beside by sofa in my living room. But look! With the pretty little pillows on top, it can be used to create additional seating when we need it.
I picked the paint colors I did because I knew they matched my art on my walls. I also knew they’d be especially great for adding pops of color to our drab brown sofa.
I’ve already picked out my next stencil designs I wan to try.
This one (called Shapes) will look great in my Florida room, and I’m anxious to try a multicolored paint design.
And for my bedroom, I’d like to try this Sakura and Birds design, and maybe add some accent tassels or rhinestones.
You can win one free Paint-A-Pillow kit which includes everything you’ll need to create one accent pillow.
