Upon first glance, I knew Space Boy and His Dog by Dian Curtis Regan would capture my kids attention.
The clever combination of comic book style writing & colorful illustrations, outer space, a bit of sibling rivalry, and the promise of a grand adventure, and my boys were hooked from the beginning.
My kids are all readers, but my youngest, Isaac (being the youngest and the need to feel original all the time), is always looking for books to read that his big brothers never have. Because this is the first in the Space Boy and His Dog series, the day it arrived he immediately scooped it up before anyone else got the chance to and read the whole book.
It’s simple enough that he understood the story, and captivating enough to hold his attention throughout. It also made his big brother, who “likes things about space more than anyone”, a bit jealous. Good thing this funny book touches on emotions regarding the sibling rivalry between Nikko and his sister.
Since then, both boys have read it several times, and it’s become Isaac’s go-to-favorite for his nightly reading homework. He thinks the parts that are most funny are the idea that a cat would be lost on the moon in the first place, and then that Nikko’s sister Posh (whom is not even supposed to be IN the story) is the one who finds the missing cat after all.
This is a great back to school book for young readers.
