What do you think about coffee bars in kitchens? I’m not going to lie, I have a friend who has a super cute one set up in her house, made from an old vintage dresser, cute coffee cup hangers and a chalk board above it, the works. And it’s precious. And I love it.
But, I don’t have an exceptionally large kitchen to set up our own coffee station like my friends. Do you? If so, LUCKY!
If not, and you’re with me on this, then hanging a small shelf with hooks can work as a coffee station in your small space too.
I’m joining with my favorite clever blogger friends this month in the Thrift Store Challenge to bring you my thrifted coffee station idea.
The Rules:
- Upcycle an item(s) from a thrift store, resale store, or garage sale into a new piece of decor.
- There’s no monthly theme.
- There’s no budget to stick to.

The shelf I used was one I found at a kids consignment sale oddly enough. I know you probably won’t find this exact same one. But be on the lookout at your thrift store or garage sales, look for any shelf (preferably with drawers) that you could add hooks to. This one on Amazon is really similar to what I created with my thrift find, if you wanted to just skip all the makeover and DIY stuff.
Creating a Coffee Station for a Small Space
Here’s what my future coffee station started life looking like…
This piece was most definitely a throwback to 90’s country, but I knew it had potential to become something great.
I almost always pick up affordable wood pieces at thrift stores or garage sales, because they’re easy to paint to give them a new life.
I removed all the metal on the front of the doors and the little metal scrolly thing on the top, and gave it two coats of Annie Sloan Pure White chalk paint. A sanding block works well to distress the edges for the weathered, farmhouse style I like.
I sealed the drawers and shelf with Daddy Van’s All Natural Beeswax & Lavender Furniture Polish.
Just a quick side note here about this wax – it’s good stuff! I use it all the time on my chalk paint projects. It’s made of natural beeswax, has zero VOC, is chemical free and non-toxic, and is scented with all natural essential oils. I could go on and on about the good things about this brand, honestly.
For the inside of the drawers, I lined them with pretty toile contact paper.
I hot glued window screen (left over from my Welcome Sign project) to the inside front of the drawers.
For tiny little drawer knobs, I painted furniture buttons just like THESE black and glued them on.
I also painted the metal hooks that were original to the shelf with black spray paint.
The drawers are great for holding your K-cups, and the hooks for your mugs.
Mount your shelf close to or over your coffee maker, and you’ve got your coffee station ready to go, perfect for a small space.
Like this Project? Pin it so you don’t forget it!

I love coffee and having a coffee station would be awesome, but I just don’t have the space. This is perfect. I really like the chicken wire on the drawers.

That is such a great idea!

This is a great idea and that shelf is just perfect! Love all the k-cups in the drawers. I set up a little coffee bar for my mom when she re did her kitchen and she could use something like this above it. Genius!
