Last Minute Christmas Decor Using Your Child’s Art

December 23, 2013 by Molly

I have a fantastic and very easy last minute Christmas decorating idea for you, and it uses those pieces of Christmas art your sweet baby just brought home from school last week.

If you looked at the pile of adorable drawings and paintings, cut outs and glitter, and just can’t bring yourself to throw them out but you’re also not sure what to do with them, well, then this is for you.
I actually have a hard time getting rid of almost any of my kids art. If you don’t believe me, check out this drawer (one of a few) full of my kids art.

So, keep in mind that this project can really be used at any time of the year for some quick and personal wall art.

Onto the project.
You’ll need:

  • White canvas (I used 11×14, gallery wrapped)
  • Craft paint
  • Your child’s art
  • Mod Podge (I like to use the glossy type for this)
  • Paint pens for decorative details
  • Clear coat of spray paint

First, pick which piece of art you’d like to display. Honestly, a flat drawing or painting works best.
Then paint your canvas in your choice of one solid color.

Next, use your clear spray coat and do a quick spray over the art. Don’t drench it, just a light coat is fine. Let it dry completely.

Using a paint brush, Mod Podge the art right onto the canvas.

Let it dry completely, then use your paint pens to add a bit of decorative detail to the “frame” around your art.

Let your canvas dry, I let mine sit for a few hours, then hang.
I have an awkward little wall in my dining room, so I grouped a few canvases together and made a mini gallery wall (and yes, I did add a frame around my light switch).

This project can be finished in just a few hours, and that includes drying time.
Your little one will be so proud to see their art as a cherished piece of art on a “real canvas”, and you’ll have a few pieces of original, one of a kind Christmas decor.

Enjoy, and Merry Christmas!
