I’m not sure I know of a parent that loves to brush their kids teeth at the beginning and end of each day. I could be wrong, but I personally don’t enjoy the battle that often ensues when it’s time for that part of my day. Anything I can do that will make brushing more enjoyable, well, I’m up for it. I’m not alone either, statistics show that 90% of moms have even admitted to using extreme measures to ensure kids brush their teeth, such as giving ultimatums, bribing with gifts, or taking away TV time. Over the years, I’ve tried all of the above tactics, some more successful than others.
My newest, and by far most unique and fun solution- I let my kids brush their teeth with the lights off in the bathroom. Yep, it’s true.
I know what you’re thinking, that’s just silly.
Hear me out.
For my boys, I found the Firefly Ready Go Brush and the Firefly Star Wars brushes (there are other characters as well- Angry Birds, Hello Kitty, Star Wars, Marvel and more). These toothbrushes are, as my six year old puts it, “Super Awesome!” The Ready Go Brush has a light-up timer that flashes from green, to yellow, to red, and also happens to be the No. 1 selling kid’s manual toothbrush. He also thinks is funny that his toothbrush has a suction cup that sticks his brush directly to our bathroom mirror.
The Star Wars Darth Vader brush my nine year old uses has flashing lights and sound that last for a full 60 seconds.
So now instead of arguing with the boys about brushing, they race to the bathroom, load the brushes with toothpaste, turn off the lights, and brush away! They giggle a lot too, and in the dark brushing has been a bit more messy, but you know what? It’s getting done, which is very encouraging to me, and hopefully building lifetime good habits, although perhaps with the bathroom light on.
Talk about good, CLEAN fun!
