This book caught my eye each time I’ve been in Barnes & Noble since the Spring. I’m not sure why I never bought it, but last week, I finally gave in. It came with a Good Read guarantee, so I figured I’d give it a try.
Wow! I wish I had grabbed it a long time ago. It was fantastic!
I have always loved the story of Esther in the Bible, I’ve done a few bible studies about her. After reading this, I feel like I could put a “face to the name”. It was like hearing about someone, knowing all about them, then actually meeting them face to face.
Chosen, the Lost Diaries of Queen Esther is a fictional book. However, it is so well written, I felt as though I were there with Esther as she walked through her life in ancient Persia.
It begins in our modern day with a discovery of scrolls which contains Esther’s personal diaries that have been hidden away for centuries.
As you read, you are taken to the village where Esther lives with Mordecai. You feel her emotions as she learns that the girls are to be taken to the palace to prepare for their night with King Xerxes as he chooses a new queen. You are sad and scared with her as she is taken away from the life and people she loves. You feel afraid and trapped as she is confined to the palace, within the harem, as she is being groomed for one opportunity to win a kings heart she does not want.
As you’re reading, you realize the oppression that women were under during her time, and even more so if you were a jewish woman.
As Esther makes the decision to approach the king without being sent for, you are nervous for her and in awe of her bravery. You feel the strength she has been given by God to save her people.
This book is the first of three by Ginger Garrett in a series called Lost Loves of the Bible. It has just the right mixture of fiction, romance, suspense, and historical fact. I will probably let my fourteen year old read it within the next year or so. If you love the story of Esther, this is a must read that I highly recommend.
