Star Wars Yoda Step Stool Makeover

I love finding a makeover treasure at Goodwill. Something that’s still solid, with good structure, that just needs a little reinventing. Add a touch of Star Wars into the makeover, and it will be a hit at my house.
Have you  a by-the-pound Goodwill? If not, and you’re a true born thrifter, you’ll want to experience one. The only one I’ve ever been to is in Nashville, where I’ve found many hidden gems.

The last time I was there, I passed by this solid oak, ugly green stool a few times, realized that it would only cost me about a nickel, so I went ahead and picked it up, knowing I’d decide what to do with it later. I knew I could use a step stool for the kids bathroom, and this one was sturdy, solid wood. It was just ugly, but it could definitely be painted.

After pondering for a while, I decided I’d paint one of my favorite my kids favorite Star Wars characters on it, Yoda.

I see little stools like this often while thrifting, but I believe they can be found unfinished at most craft stores.

This is an easy DIY project.

As always, I lightly sanded the stool, and gave it a good coat of while primer. Then, I painted the sides a chocolate brown, and the top a bright white. Sorry, forgot to take pics of those steps, but you get the idea.

Next, I printed a picture I found online, used a sheet of tracing paper under it, and traced the outline of Yoda.

Then, I outlined Yoda again with paint pens so that I’d still see the lines when I started painting.

From this point, it’s a bit like a coloring book. If you can stay within the lines, you’ll do fine. If you can’t, or you make a mistake, just remember it’s paint. It can always be painted over. Once the image is all painted in, go back over the lines again with your paint pen to make them pop. I added a few words to mine, but you don’t have to.

Last, I used a water based, clear acrylic sealer. I let is set overnight, and by the next day, it’s ready to use.

If the idea of painting seems intimidating, you could always simply print the image online or use one from a book or magazine, and decoupage it onto the stool.

The final result is unique and fun. I love it, my little one loves it. Now, my only problem is getting him to quit playing in the sink!
