Here’s a story of a little sewing machine cabinet and it’s beautiful makeover.
It was found almost two years ago at Goodwill, and for only a few dollars. It wasn’t very pretty, a light wood that had seen better days.
It was purchased and brought home to get spruced up a bit, and be put to use for my daughters sewing machine. Unfortunately, it didn’t fit, and was of no other use to us.
So, sadly it went back into the garage, with the intention of sending it back to Goodwill.
However, over time things got piled on top of it, and it was completely forgotten.
About a week ago, I decided I needed a new table for my front room. I didn’t want to pay major cash, and couldn’t find anything I liked anyway. One afternoon, I saw my little sewing cabinet peaking out from under the pile of junk in the garage, willing me to remember, to take another look.
The light bulb came on, and I knew this piece would do the job. I gathered up the supplies I needed:
- primer
- left over Ralph Lauren coffee colored paint
- silver spray paint for the hardware
- a paint brush
- fine sandpaper
- water based acrylic sealer
The makeover was easy.
- Step One, clean with soap & water, remove hardware, then when dry, apply a coat of primer
- Step Two, dry brush two coats of coffee colored paint over the cabinet
- Step Three, after letting dry overnight, lightly sand the edges to give it a bit of a worn look
- Step Four, spray paint the hardware silver
- Step Five, apply a coat of acrylic sealer and let cure before using
It was beautiful, but still didn’t look quite finished. It still needed something.
Finally, I used my white paint pen, and free handed the word “Smile” on the top. That was it. The final touch.
It looks beautiful and happy in my front room.
It does indeed make me smile.
