With a high demand from young readers today for more supernatural and fantasy type books, and not always ones that I as a parent would approve, I was pleased to hear of a new series Son of Angels: Jonah Stone Series, by Christian author and pastor Jerel Law. Spirit Fighter is the first installment of this series. The series has been compared to Percy Jackson, with the exception of the element of Biblical spiritual warfare.

My Opinion:
My 12 year old son has read all of the Percy Jackson books, and he enjoyed them. He was very excited to dive into this book as well. When I first read the synopsis, I wasn’t quite sure what my thoughts were, because right away you learn that the main characters are Nephilim. I don’t believe that there are Nephilim children walking the Earth today, nor does the book say that they are. But, it’s an element that the author has used for his characters, and I understand that. I just didn’t want my son to be confused, because after all, it is something that is mentioned in scriptures. After my husband and I discussed it, and we spoke to my son about it, we decided to go ahead and let him read the book. I had already read through the first several chapters, and actually enjoyed the writing.
Let me clarify, if you are a fan of Frank Peretti or Ted Dekker, then you may consider this series a similar style, only for younger readers.
In the end, my son truly enjoyed this book. He finished it over one weekend and has said he liked it almost as much as the Percy Jackson books. He is looking forward to the next book, and said he definitely wants to read the entire series.

I love that you talked to your son about the book and reality/fiction. So many parents just buy books and movies without checking them out beforehand to make sure they're appropriate.
I think it would be a good book. Granted, I don't have teenagers (I'd read this for me first!), but I do think I'd let them read books like this. Like you, I'd talk to them about it. Some parents don't let them read the books or see the movies at all, and I think that's a little extreme in some cases. So I'd be anxious to read this book myself. 🙂
as a mom and a youth services librarian, this would be a huge hit! so many times parents come to me looking for an exciting read that will hook the kids, with less of the violence and language that seems to be turning up earlier and earlier. as a mom, i think my son would love this book!
Our entire family enjoyed the Percy Jackson series. This looks like something we could all enjoy as well. Thanks for the great review and guidance. This is a book that we will be getting one way or another!
My daughter loved the Percy books so I know she would love this one
