Make Your Own MINECRAFT Costume {Easy DIY}

October 9, 2013 by Molly

2025 Update- This is a super fun DIY costume we made way back in 2013. It was pretty innovative for the time, because there were almost no options to purchase Minecraft costumes back then, ha!

My seven year old loves, I mean love, love, loves Minecraft. Last year we needed a last minute costume, so what could’ve been better than to become Steve from Minecraft. I’m not sure what the stores will have available this year, but last year there were not any Minecraft costumes, so we made our own.

If, at this point you’re wondering what is Minecraft? Well, ask your kiddos, they’ll know. It’s a video game they play and build worlds, and it’s a bit bizarre because it’s all pixel. With all the technology available, they’re loving this. Anyway, our costume is inspired by the main character Steve.

It was a very simple DIY project, and I think anyone could do it.
I began with a square box that fit his head, which the priority box from the post office actually worked perfectly. You may need to find one that will fit your own child’s head.
Also, I used packing tape (brown works great for the inside of the box), an exacto knife, and craft paint in white, black, and multiple shades of brown.

First, tape the box together from the INSIDE. This is important because you won’t want it on the outside because the paint doesn’t work well over it.

Next, now remember, I’m keeping it simple, I drew on and then cut (with the exacto knife) a T-shape for his eyes and nose. I just eyeballed it for where his eyes and nose would be, and then trimmed it up a bit where it needed to be.

Two tips- Start with a smaller T-shaped hole than a larger one because it’s easier to make the hole bigger where it needs to be instead of smaller if you cut it too big.
Also keep in mind that everything Minecraft is geometric, so try to keep your lines clean and straight.

Now, for the paint. Please don’t be intimidated by this part, it’s really not that hard. I had about less than a day to make mine, so I didn’t put too much detail into this. I started with the lighter color for the face, let it dry, and then layered with the other shaded of brown for the hair. Again, keep in mind clean geometric lines.
Finally, add a white square on the side of each eye, and a black mouth.
I imagine that you can add as many fine lines and details into this part that you’d like. You could take a ruler and get the lines and squares perfect. I didn’t and I also think it’s okay.

We paired his Steve head with a blue polo shirt, and a pair of dark blue sweats. Again, be as specific as you’d like on Steve’s Minecraft attire. We went with what we already had. Joshua also grabbed his Nerf sword to use an accessory.

Over the years, we’ve made many of our costumes, but I believe of all of them, this Minecraft Steve has been one of the biggest hits of all.
My son loved it, his friends loved it, and he still played with it until it literally fell apart a few years later.
