Mama’s know there’s always so much to do, and you’ll find out in the lovely new children’s book Baby Penguins Love Their Mama by Melissa Guion, Penguin mama’s aren’t any different! This penguin mama has lots and lots of babies, and everyday is busy with something new to do with them.
Monday- Swimming Lessons.
Tuesday- Sliding Lessons
Wednesday- Waddling Lessons
And on and on…
Penguin Mama loves her babies so much. Do they know, she wonders, just how much?
My kids and I love this book. I had just packed up my kids in the car to run some errands when our copy of this book arrived in the mail, so I gave it to my boys to read while we drove. I listened as Josh my eight year old read it to Isaac who is five. It is really precious, but my heart swelled when he got to the end and the little penguin babies let their mama know just how much they love her too, and Josh said “Mom, this book reminds me so much of how much you love us too!”
It’s not often that I can’t decide if I like the story or the illustrations more in a book, but in Baby Penguins Love Their Mama, I am drawn equally to both. The sketches and colors are simple yet adorable, as is the story. This book has made it’s way to my top five favorite children’s books.
Also, as we’ve read through our book several times, I realized it’s a great book to pair with an arts and crafts project with your little ones. You could do a search online for penguin crafts, or you can use my wood penguin tutorial for some great mommy & me creative time as a companion to reading time with Baby Penguins Love Their Mama.

Melissa Guion’s first picture book, Baby Penguins Everywhere!, was selected for The Original Art 2012, an exhibition of the year’s best illustrated children’s books. Melissa swears she could draw baby penguins all day, but she may take a hiatus to do a book about her daughter’s guinea pigs. She lives with her family in Brooklyn, New York.
