New Children’s Book- Gemina: The Crooked-Neck Giraffe by Karen B. Winnick {Giveaway Winner Announced}

June 6, 2014 by Molly

Did you know that June is National Zoo and Aquarium Month?
In honor of such a fun month, I’d like to let you know about a sweet new children’s book- Gemina: The Crooked-Neck Giraffe by Karen B. Winnick.
Oh, the giraffe is my very favorite animal on the planet, so when I first read this story to my little ones, I honestly teared up by the end. This story is about a very famous and precious giraffe with a most interesting and encouraging story.

Gemina is about a real Baringo giraffe who was born healthy at the San Diego Wild Animal Park. She came to live at the Santa Barbara Zoo; at the age of three, a bump appeared on the side of her neck, and it grew over time. No one knew what caused it, or what it might be; it didn’t seem to bother her, and she soon became the most famous resident of the zoo. She was an inspiration to many visitors, since she never let her difference affect her demeanor. Click HERE for an article in the Santa Barbara news about her.
This book tells her story, and even shows a photograph of the real Gemina, as well as real letters from the giraffe’s young fans.

What I love about this book is the pure honesty that it brings to little ones about being different. The moral lesson that just because someone or something looks different, we should never treat them in a way that would be mean or harmful. It also teaches the lesson to never let our differences hinder us. Gemina the giraffe was an inspiration to many people. The truth that the author creates using the life of this very unique giraffe as an example is one that is lifelong. She approaches the subject in a very sensitive way that children are comfortable with and are sure to enjoy.

The author has put together a fun and free activity kit that the kids will enjoy, so CLICK HERE to download it.

Even better, all of the author’s proceeds from the sale of Gemina: The Crooked-Neck Giraffe go directly to supporting animals at the Santa Barbara Zoo.

 Karen B. Winnick is the author and illustrator of many picture books for children, including Barn Sneeze, Mr. Lincoln’s Whiskers, and A Year Goes Round: Poems for the Months. She lives in Los Angeles with her family.

One lucky winner will receive a copy of Gemina: The Crooked-Neck Giraffe along with an adorable plush giraffe. (U.S. addresses only)
