Nerd Day Costume Ideas for Homecoming Week!

September 18, 2014 by Molly

Awww!
Nerds are so cute!
It’s homecoming at my kids high school, so they’ve put together a few really fun costumes for Spirit Week.
If you’re looking for a quick and easy costume, you can never go wrong being a nerd. And let’s admit it, nerds are so much cooler now than they used to be!

To create a nerd look, there are a few things to look for, and almost all of them can be found very inexpensively at a local thrift store, if not already in your home.

You should definitely hit up your own closets and the thrift stores first, but here’s a few links to products on Amazon for some extra inspiration-

Glasses
These are really a must. Try to pop lenses out of an old pair of sunglasses or from the theater 3D glass you know you have because you forgot to drop them back in the box when the movie was over.

Suspenders or Belts
You can ususally find these cheap at thrift stores. Don’t shy away from crazy colors either.

Knee High Socks
Any colors, but white is always a classic look

Graphic Tee Shirt
Any graphic t-shirt will do, but if you have a superhero or anything with a gamer theme, even better.

Non Matching Pants
Well, they can match if they need to, but a patterned pant works great.

Books or a Backpack
If you’re dressing up for school, then you’re good to go

A Tie
These can go for girls or guys but a good necktie or even better a bow tie is perfect.

Cardigans
Again, girls or guys can rock a nerdy cardigan. These are easy to find at thrift stores, and they don’t even have to fit just right.

The Right Hair Style
Don’t over think this, but do make sure you take a minute to do something with your hair. For girls, uneven piggy tails or for boys, super gelled hair is the way to go.

Shoes
Whether you rock the sock and sandals look, or wear a pair of dress shoes with shorts, don’t forget to pay attention to what shoes you wear

Roll Up Your Long Pants
Not necessarily like Steve Urkel, but you could go that far if you wanted. Either way, a large cuff rolled enough times to see your socks is perfect.

Fortunately, the nerd look is very in right now. I think I could probably rename this post How to Dress Like a Hipster and be spot on.
My son laughed the morning he was getting ready and said other than the suspenders and glasses, this is his everyday wardrobe.

Just remember, one of the most important things to keep in mind during homecoming week, Halloween, or what ever you may dress up for, remember to have fun and be kind to your fellow classmates!
