Our First Pet Adoption Story

Did you know October is Pet Adoption Month?
Have you ever wanted to adopt a dog, or maybe you have already?

We have two huge Great Danes- Thor and Harley. Thor is our rescue, when we adopted him we honestly weren’t even looking to add a dog to our household. But, when we found out his owner could not longer keep him, we knew our home would be the perfect place. Unlike many rescued dogs in need, Thor was well loved but due to difficult circumstances, his owner simply wasn’t in a place to care for him the way they wanted to.
We’re a big family and we had a lot of love to share with this big guy. So, from Louisiana to Florida he came, and right away he was a perfect fit.

He was only about three years old when we got him, now ten years later we call him The Old Man.
The vet tells us he’s old for a Great Dane. We’ve been told they don’t often live to be thirteen, but he’s hanging in there, and just as sweet as ever.

Thor has been such a faithful dog, and we’ve grown so attached to him. My husband and I recognized  that he’s getting older and the house would be empty when the day comes that he leaves us. Because of this, about three years ago we drove to Mississippi to pick up our second Great Dane, Harley.

We call Harley the teenager, because, well that’s what it feels like with him these days. He’s full of energy, but so obedient and well trained. He loves attention and loves being in the middle of whatever our family is doing. Sitting on the couch watching TV? Yep, you’ll have Harley’s head in your lap. Kids playing outside? He’s there.
And, he and Thor are BFF’s. Since the day we brought Harley home Thor has seemed to regain some of his youthful playfulness. In fact, my husband and I have often wondered if having a younger buddy around has helped Thor stay alert, happy, and well.

I understand that not everyone can rescue pets. But there are other ways to help these furry companions. During October, you can help dogs in need each time you shop at Sam’s Club and purchase Pedigree dog food or plain dog treats. For every one purchased, one bowl of dog food will be donated by Pedigree to a dog in need.

Having the two huge dogs, it probably comes as no surprise that we buy the Pedigree Adult Dry Dog Food 55lb bag. You should see me trying to get that big bag into the cart.

At least they put it on the bottom of the shelf for easier access. It also helps to know that every time this month I heft that bag into my cart, I’ll be helping to feed shelter dogs.

Like most great surprises, they’re unexpected. We weren’t anticipating adding two new very large members to our family in just a few years, but these two pets are such blessings. These dogs are loyal companions, protectors, and friends. They love our family as much as we love them, and these days I can’t even imagine life without them.

I love Great Danes… they are fabulous dogs. I can't even imagine the amount of food you go through. #client
