I used to think that to share a DIY or a makeover here on the blog it needed to be a huge one with a big wow factor and a ten step tutorial.
Then you know what? I realized that sometimes it’s the little updates I make to pieces that just go right, and they’re easy, and they’re makeovers that anyone can do that I need to share.
Some of the posts that you all love here on the blog are the simple and practical ones, like my No-Sew Dr. Seuss shirt or the How to Clean Wax from Jars (who knew that would be an all time favorite). So, I thought maybe once or twice a month I’d share some of the simple makeovers I’ve done that I think will inspire you.
The Giraffe Planter.
Honest, I almost didn’t buy this guy. He was $2 at a school band fundraiser yard sale we had over the summer. The kind in the gym where families are selling their stuff to raise money for the band trip in November. You bet we were participating.
This giraffe was staring at me the entire day from across the gym floor like a freshmen with a crush on a senior. No. Nope, no, you aren’t coming home with me. I kept trying to convince him. But when he was left at the end of the day, and his owner told me she’d sell him for only 50¢ how could I say no?
So he sat on my art room shelves in all his yellow gold glory for about a month before I decided to give him a makeover. I debated whether to spray paint him navy, gold, tiffany blue, gosh. What color? Then it occurred to me that I couldn’t go wrong with white and besides, I already had white spray paint/primer combo on hand. And if I didn’t like it I could always go over it again with another color.
I love him. Love. Love. Love. It would be cool if I didn’t kill the succulent that I planted, but that’s another story.
But then, the other day I was browsing the Anthropologie website and look what I found…
I think I got it right, do you? Obviously I know that everyone won’t find a super cool giraffe to makeover. Maybe you will. But the point is, don’t overlook those diamonds in the rough. I hated the original color of this guy, and for a few hours during a yard sale I couldn’t see past it to what a beauty he could become.
My makeover tip- Pay attention to the shape of an item. If it suits your home and space and all it needs is a paint job, it just may be perfect for you.
