The brand new children’s book Good Dream, Bad Dream: The World’s Heroes Save the Night! by Juan Calle and Serena Valentino is the product of a successful Kickstarter campaign this year. Many children will be able to relate to little Julio in this Spanish bilingual story as he learns to face his fears of bad dreams head on.
With encouragement from his papa and the help of a big imagination, Julio learns about Good Dream heroes that can come help chase away the Bad Dreams.

Around the globe and throughout history people have relied on legendary heroes for help.
Julio can’t sleep because he thinks he’ll have bad dreams. So his papa tells him a comforting secret: Anyone can summon mythic avengers to conquer their fears. Now those monsters under the bed and in the closet don’t stand a chance! Julio learns that his imagination is mighty and can turn all his dreams into good ones.
This story has universal appeal with its vibrant comic book art and bilingual Spanish translation. We share common experiences, no matter where we’re from. And we all have unlimited power when we let our imaginations fly.

I like how Julio’s dad tells him about so many different heroes derived from legends and folk lore from around the world. These days, many children probably don’t even know much about Vikings and some of the other heroes in this story. In fact, the Viking was my sons favorite Good Dream hero. Good Dream, Bad Dream is written in a way that lends to open discussion about fears and worries and how to face them.
I will honestly say, that as many many types of heroes are portrayed in this book, as Christian I do wish a hero of our faith would’ve been represented as well.
My oldest daughter has taken Spanish all throughout high school, so the younger boys enjoyed hearing her read the Spanish interpretations. Even if Spanish is not a language that is familiar to your family, the translation included on each page can be a learning opportunity.
