YA Medieval Romance- An Uncertain Choice by Jody Hedlund

It only takes a second to walk down the YA aisle in most book stores before you realize that if you’re looking for a clean, uplifting, and even innocent book, it’s going to be very hard to find. I enjoy all types of novels, ranging from YA to historical fiction, both in the Christian realm and outside of it as long as it’s a clean read. I want to be able to recommend books to my teenage daughter, and unfortunately many books in the YA genre today are not stories I’d want her to read.

When one of my favorite Christian authors, Jody Hedlund announced that she would be branching out into the YA genre with her newest novel An Uncertain Choice, I had a feeling that she’d bring to the table a story that I’d recommend to any book lover, no matter what the age. 
And how correct I was!

About An Uncertain Choice:

Due to her parents’ promise at her birth, Lady Rosemarie has been prepared to become a nun on the day she turns eighteen. Then, shortly before her birthday, a friend of her father’s enters the kingdom and proclaims her parents’ will left a second choice—if Rosemarie can marry before the eve of her eighteenth year, she will be exempt from the ancient vow.

Before long, Rosemarie is presented with the three most handsome and brave knights in the land. But when the knights’ arrival results in a series of attacks within her land, she begins to wonder if the convent is the best place after all. If only one of the knights—the one who appears the most guilty—had not already captured her heart.

My Thoughts:

After reading the short novella prequel The Vow and meeting Lady Rosemarie as a young lady, I couldn’t wait until the next part of her story in the full length novel An Uncertain Choice. And come on, that cover is gorgeous, who wouldn’t want to grab it right off the shelf?

Lady Rosemarie is in quite the predicament, just before her 18th birthday and ready to enter a convent, she’s given an unexpected reprieve if she can find true love before she turns 18 and marry.
What girl wouldn’t want three of the most nobel and handsome knights to vie for her attention? 
I smiled because it made me think of a medieval version of the Bachelorette.

The storyline in An Uncertain Choice is fun and refreshing. While I thought I had the plot figured out, there are a few twists that left me guessing until the end.

Like I said before, I want to recommend books with characters that show strong moral conduct and standards, even when real life hormones are raging, as they usually are within YA novels. Lady Rosemarie and her champions will capture your heart. You’ll be reminded what true chivalry looks like, and the way a true gentleman and lady can behave even when faced with temptation. Are the characters flawless? No, but that’s what keeps them real and relatable.

The ending is wrapped up tidily with all of your questions answered, but at the same time there is a lovely cliffhanger that sets up the next story in the series…
