Cupcake Christmas Ornament Tutorial Using Dollar Store Supplies

I’ve seen some adorable cupcake ornaments on Pinterest and blogs this year, and love them. My teenage daughter actually made several last Christmas from items she found at our local dollar store which are similar but not quite the same as some of the others I’ve seen.

While I meant to share the tutorial for these, honestly, all year long, I’m just now lazily getting to them. Better late than never, no?

Supplies-

Small styrofoam balls (I used 1.5 inch)
Assorted Colors of Glitter
Small Cupcake liners that will fit your styrofoam balls
Pony beads
White Caulk (I can’t remember if she got this at the dollar store, but I know for sure it’s inexpensive at stores like Walmart, Home Depot, or Amazon)
Twine for hanging
Exacto knife
LOW-TEMP hot glue gun or Elmers Glue

First, so your cupcake will sit flat in the liner while you work, use an exacto knife and slice off a part of the bottom of the ball.
Then, hot glue (using low-temp, or it will melt your styrofoam) the ball into the liner. You can also use Elmers Glue if you’re not comfortable with a hot glue gun.

Next, pipe your caulk just like you would when icing a real cupcake. My real cupcakes never turn out really great looking, so not all of my cupcake ornaments looked perfect either, but they all had cute unique charm.

While the caulk is soft, all the pony bead to the top like the cherry on top. I pushed it down with the end of a paintbrush so I didn’t mess up the “icing” with my fingers.

Important- make sure you put the bead in far enough to stick, but not too far that the hole isn’t accessible because this is what you string the twine through for hanging.

Last, for “sprinkles” use glitter on the caulk while it’s soft.

Let them dry completely overnight before stringing twine through for hanging.

Perfectly iced or not, these little ornaments are great for a whimsical tree, or even as gift toppers for friends and family.
