Everyone loves a good Cinderella story, and I feel like that what happened to this pretty little French Provincial dresser. She began with a not-so-beautiful and very outdated yellowish white, high gloss finish. But she had lots of potential, and I felt like the Fairy Godmother giving her a new fabulous chance.
This is my first time using Country Chic paint, and I absolutely love it.
You can see the drastic change in the before and after photos.
From outdated into a beautiful princess.
Before I painted, I cleaned and dusted the dresser, and because of the glossy finish, the company recommended giving the piece a light sanding.
Then, it was ready for paint.
Ocean Breeze is a limited edition color, and I’m so glad I chose it for this dresser. The entire piece took two coats, and I only used a little less that half of the paint. I still have plenty left over for a future project.
Have you ever had a plan go off course, only to find you like the results even better than what you had originally planned?
That’s what happened to me with the handles on the drawers. I assumed I’d be able to unscrew them and spray paint them white, but they were set into the dresser with some sort of screw I wasn’t able to get off.
So, since I was painting the drawers anyway, I just sprayed them while they were still attached. I did the same thing with the decorative parts of the upper two drawers.
Once I added the blue paint on the outside of the drawers and around the handles, I actually loved the way they looked distressed and a little of the original yellow could still be seen in the white and against the blue. So, I left it.
Once all of that was dry, I used the metallic cream on all the handles and decorative embellishments. Because after all, what princess doesn’t need some bling?
I used two coats of the metallic cream in Silver Bullet, and it’s fabulous.
The cream is very thick, like a lotion, and easy to apply using my brush. I was using it on such small parts as an accent, the brush was able to get into the areas I wanted.
I hardly made a dent in the amount of paint I have left after embellishing this piece, so I’ll be able to be on the lookout for more projects that need some bling.
Using a lint free rag, I added a bit of the cream to the legs of the dresser as well, making sure to get down in all the cracks and curves. Then, I wiped the excess away.
Distressing your furniture using this brand is easy, you don’t even have to use sandpaper if you don’t want (although that’s what I did). You can simply use a wet cloth.
The brand website has several tutorial videos that help with this technique.
I may still go back an give it a coat of wax, I’m undecided about that. I like to seal my pieces, but my mom likes the distressed look. So, I may let her use it for a while and let it distress in a few more areas naturally, and then go back and wax it in a few weeks.
In the meantime, she’s loving it just like it is, and so am I.
