This recipe for peanut butter cookies is one of the best I’ve tried, and it’s been passed down to me from my mom, who got it from her grandmother. She called her Grandmommy (which my kids also call my mom) so these beloved cookies have taken on the name of “Grandmommy’s Cookies”.
The cookies are crunchy on the edges and creamy in the middle. When you top them with a sprinkle of brown sugar, they melt in your mouth.

I originally shared this recipe and story over at The Crafty Blog Stalker last month, but wanted to make sure to share it here on Just a Little Creativity as well. I just know you’ll love it.
These small cookies make delicious bite sized dessert with a glass of milk on the side. It’s summer, so get the kids in the kitchen to help you whip up a batch. I bet you already have all the ingredients you need in your pantry right now.
My parents live just down the road from us, and my kids are blessed to have been able to grow up with at least one set of grandparents close by. The other day, my mom was at my house and we were discussing recipes, baking, and cookies. My seven year old overheard us and said “Grandmommy, can you make us our favorite peanut butter cookies? You know, the ones your Grandmommy made for you when you were little”
The funny thing is, until then I didn’t even know her cookie recipe came from her grandmother. It’s a conversation I suppose she and I never had, but that my son and her had talked about one evening when he was gushing over how good the cookies were.
It turns out this recipe is in fact one that was passed down through the generations, although it’s been adjusted and tweaked a bit here and there over the years.
I’m not sure when my great-grandmother started baking these. Did she make them for her own children first? Did she learn from her mother or grandmother? Was it simple enough that it was created during the Depression Era, or it was even earlier than that? I wish I knew the story.
But, I have a hunch that all of our Grandmommys probably have a very similar version of these peanut butter cookies.
Ingredients:
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup sugar (you could also use 1/2 cup Truvia baking blend sugar substitute)
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla extract
Sprinkle of brown sugar
Directions:
Mix all ingredients well in mixing bowl.
Refrigerate dough for 10-15 minutes.
Lay parchment paper on baking sheet and roll dough into 1 tbsp balls.
Gently press to flatten (you can even be fancy and use a fork to make line on the top)
Sprinkle brown sugar on top of each cookie.
Bake at 350 for 8-10 minutes, cookies will still look soft when they come out of the oven, but they will set with no problem.
Let cool before serving.
Enjoy with a glass of milk on the side.
Use a tablespoon like an ice-cream scooper in the dough for the perfect size cookie balls.

Flatten with a spoon and sprinkle with brown sugar.

Enjoy!

I never got to meet my great-grandmother. But I know that from now on when I’m baking her cookies, a little part of me feels just a bit closer to her memory, and I hope that one day my kids will say that it reminds them of their own Grandmommy too.
I hope you enjoy these cookies as much as we do.
How about you, do you have any recipes that have been passed down from one generation to the other?
What are some of the recipes you’d like to pass down to your own children?

Ah, what a wonderful and heartwarming post. I fondly remember my grandmother making peanut butter cookies, but never did get her recipe, so I rarely make them. I look forward to make these cookies, with your great grandmother’s recipe. Thanks for sharing. Isn’t amazing how certain foods can tie generation to generation with special memories?

I hope you do get to make these, and that they’re close to your grandmother’s. If not maybe you can figure out how to tweak the recipe to make them like hers were. Enjoy!
This is the recipe I’ve used for over 50 years …we call them 3 ingredient Cookies…altho I do add vanilla which the original recipe didn’t call for it. I’ve never put brown sugar on mine but I will try it. Your photos are so pretty…will it be ok if I use one of them with a link back to you, in my draft about these very cookies ? 2 of my grands had wisdom teeth taken out a couple days ago and I made them Peanut Butter Cookies yesterday…the girls can eat them as they are so soft….
Vanilla would be a great addition, I’ll have to give that a try! And yes, you may use one of the pics with a link back. Hope your grands are feeling better, wisdom teeth are no joke.
The brown sugar is such a nice touch., great story. I love recipes that are passed down.?

I’m such a peanut butter addict. Peanut butter cookies are a food staple as far as I’m concerned. Thanks so much for sharing your grandmommy’s recipe with us at Funtastic Friday. It’s nice to hand down family recipes.
I’m also a PB fan, well that and anything chocolate! Enjoy!
Hi Molly! How lovely of you to link up this beautiful recipe at the Thriving on Thursdays linky party last week. Oh how I love Peanut Butter Cookies. I did make some of a large batch of cookies I made which I thought were pretty good but I must try your recipe really soon. Just letting you know I’m featuring your post at tomorrow’s party. Hope to see you again some time.
