Coffee Play Dough Recipe {Fun for Kids}

June 21, 2012 by Molly

Making play dough is on our Summer Bucket List, so I wanted to jump in with a tried and true recipe for Coffee Play Dough.
It smells great, the kids love to help, and I guarantee the ingredients are already in your kitchen.

Mom used to make this with us all the time when we were kids, and I’ve made it with mine for many years, so I thought I share it with you!

Ingredients:
  • 2 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup of warm (NOT hot) coffee
  • 1/2 cup of salt

Directions:
  • In a mixing bowl, combine dry ingredients and sift througly (I let the kids do this with their hands)
  • Add the coffee to combine. Note here– the grown-up will want to get the mixing of the ingredients started because it’s STICKY! I mean, your fingers will look a bit like Creature from the Black Lagoon until it gets mixed completely.
  • Knead until well blended. If it seems too dry, you can add a tiny bit of water, if it seems to wet add a bit of flour. You’ll be able to tell when the consistency is just right.

Once it’s mixed, it’s time to play!
I like to keep flour on hand or even spread a bit on the table to prevent the dough from sticking to the table surface.

Coffee Play Dough will keep for quite a long time if you store it in an airtight container.

If you open the container and find it’s too dry or moist, you can add a bit of water or flour to remoisten it or to dry it up.

Enjoy!

This looks so easy! I've made playdough in the past, but it dried up pretty quickly. I'll definitely give this a try. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

I would love to make this with the kids this summer. I am going to save it for a rainy day.

Looks and sounds awesome, I wish my boys were into playdough! They're totally boys and all they want to do is play outside. Nothing wrong with that, but unless I'm pitching them a baseball or playing some hoops, they prefer to be left alone…even my 3 y/o!

That looks like fun! I don't have coffee in the house, I wonder if cornmeal or something gritty like that would work.

Thanks for the recipe! I've never tried making coffee play dough before- I've made the cooked kind though.
