Like Bug Juice on a Burger by Julie Sternberg {Giveaway Winner Announced} Summer Reading Series for Kids

July 23, 2013 by Molly

Like Bug Juice on a Burger

I hate camp. I just hate it. I wish I didn’t. But I do. Being here is
worse than bug juice on a burger. Or homework on Thanksgiving. Or water
seeping into my shoes. In this sequel to the critically acclaimed Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie,
Eleanor is off to summer camp. At first she’s excited to carry on the
family tradition at Camp Wallumwahpuck, but when she gets there she
finds icky bugs, terrible food, and worst of all: swim class, where she
just can’t seem to keep up with everyone else. But as the days go on,
Eleanor realizes that even the most miserable situations can be full of
special surprises and that growing up is full of belly flops.

Little Eleanor is facing what many of our kids have encountered or are about to this summer- heading to camp for the very first time!
If you have a little one who will be going to summer camp, and may be a little nervous about it, I suggest reading a copy of Like Bug Juice on a Burger first.

Eleanor’s thoughts are so cute and funny, and she deals with her different fears and thoughts that most kids would face, a bit of homesickness, and even a few misadventures along the way. She realizes that, even if she doesn’t like everything about camp, maybe things aren’t so bad after all. With her new friends to help out, she realizes that she is indeed more brave than she thought.

My first grader was able to read our copy with a little help on some of the words. He laughed often, and the book actually got him to open up about some of his fears and thoughts on going to summer camp himself. I think that all elementary school age children would enjoy this book, and will laugh and enjoy the witty humor that’s easy to listen to or read.
