UpCycled Round Wood Tabletop Becomes Planet Earth- Boys Room Makeover

At the beginning of this year, I decided it was time for my youngest boys room to get a makeover. They still share a room, and had the trees painted on their walls from it’s time as my youngest son’s nursery. He’s 8 now, so yeah, it was time for a change.

I took on one project at at time. I chose a the color pallet both boys love, took a few of their favorite elements to heart, and created a general idea of what the final room would look like.
They don’t both like the same things, but do enjoy similar colors, so I made it work.
Now they have a dark blue wall, some funky faux metal initials, a Star Wars BB8 dresser and a Tardis dresser (which I’ll show you later this week).

However, the first project was a trash to treasure makeover by painting an old wood tabletop as the planet Earth. They’ve both got a thing for outer space, so I thought a giant planet on their wall would be awesome. Even better, I let Isaac help paint it. Over the years I’ve learned that any time you can let the little ones help and put their own stamp on something, they cherish and appreciate it even more. If you follow me on Instagram, you may have even seen a few pics of the work in progress and wondered what it was for.

I found this great wood table top at a garage sale for only $1 and although I had no idea what to use it for, I knew I’d use it for something. It’s been in my garage for over a year until I decided it was room makeover time, and then the inspiration hit.

First, we sanded the entire piece and together Isaac and I primed it white.

Then, I put several shades of blue paint in a tray, and with no specific pattern in mind except to cover the entire circle, we painted it blue. We let it dry overnight before adding the greens and browns for the land.

So Isaac would know where to paint the greens and browns, I outlined with white paint where the continents are. I didn’t really try to be perfect, just approximate. Then, with the same technique we used for the water (which was basically no technique at all), we painted our land.

For hanging, I added screws to the back and a heavy duty wire hanger. I anchored a screw into the wall, and it was done.

If found other size table tops, I could create an entire solar system. Or even only a few more, and then paint the rest onto the wall.
As it is, they love it!
