Like it or not, ’tis the season for pumpkin spice everything! These square pumpkin spice rice krispy pops are inspired by the kids book The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin by Joe Traiano illustrated by Susan Banta. My son brought this book home a few years ago, and it became one of his favorites of the season. We don’t really do scary Halloween but we do love costumes, decor, treats, and essentially all things Fall.
Of course, the book became popular and now there’s a Spookely the Square Pumpkin movie, toys, and all types of goodies to go with it. If you’ve got little ones, the moral of the story is to promote the end of bullying.
Last year, I was part of a group of bloggers participate in a #MovieMondayChallenge, hosted by C’mon Get Crafty! We decide on a topic, genre, or specific movie to use for inspiration and everyone gets free reign to create something wonderful! I shared this recipe during the Halloween challenge, and it was a hit!
Pumpkin Spice Rice Krispy Pops Recipe
The recipe begins the same as your traditional Rice Krispy treats, but I’ve added a few more things to create the pumpkin color and flavor.
I also used green Twizzlers for the stem. I found them on clearance at Target but Amazon carries them as well. They’re key lime pie flavored, and I think they’re pretty tasty. If you’d like an alternative, a simple brown pretzel or even a pretzel dipped in white chocolate mixed with green food coloring would work too.
Ingredients
- 3 Tbs butter
- 4 cups marshmallows
- 6 cups rice krispy cereal
- 1 Tbs pumpkin spice
- 1 Tbs cinnamon spice
- 2-3 drops each of yellow and red food coloring
Instructions
- Melt butter over low heat
- Add marshmallows and stir until melted, then remove from heat
- Add food coloring until you achieve the desired orange color
- Add spices and stir well
- Add rice krispys and stir until well coated
- Coat 13x9 baking pan with spray or butter and press the cereal mixture until level
- Cut into squares when cooled

When you’re treats are ready, cut them into squares, and insert a popsicle stick into the bottom and your chopped twizzlers into the top for the stem.
