Have you ever tried to figure out a good way to display all your children’s “most favorite LEGO minifigures ever”?
My son has most of his on his bookshelves, which works fine, but really isn’t the most awesome way to display his extensive collection of LEGO mini figures. Oh, and while we’re on the subject, is my kid the only one who wants to purchase an entire, crazy expensive set, just for the figures?
As I knew I’d be participating in the Thrift Store Challenge again this year, I had decided to save a really high quality chocolate candy box that was left over from Christmas, and use it at some point, I just wasn’t sure yet what for.
Now, I don’t anticipate that you’ll be finding many chocolate boxes at the thrift store, but it’s very possible you may find them on Valentines clearance or on deep mark downs right now at a regular store. The purpose of the challenge is about upcycling and saving money to create something new, so this project counts in my opinion. And who knows, maybe you will find a box really similar at your local thrift store that you can use to create your own LEGO minifigure display shadow box as well.

The Rules:
- Upcycle an item(s) from a thrift store, resale store, or garage sale into a new piece of decor.
- There’s no monthly theme.
- There’s no budget to stick to.

While I was creating these galvanized metal planters I figured, why not give the same metal paint technique a try on that box I had saved? I still wasn’t sure what I would use it for, I had originally thought of maybe essential oil storage.

Start by spray painting your box in a metallic sliver. I like the metal look from both the Krylon & Rustoleum brands.

Using white, black, and gray craft paint, you can create the patina of galvanized metal.

Use a paint brush or napkins, and layer each color at a time, wiping off if you get it too heavy in any one spot. You can brush it on or pounce it, whatever you’re most comfortable with. Try not to overload your brush or napkin with too much paint at one time though. Slow and steady wins the race in this aged metal look.
I used a rough, chippy paint brush to get the black into the cracks and corners of the shadowbox. This gives it more depth and age.

It wasn’t until I was completely finished that I realized the box had such a metal, masculine look to it that it would be perfect as a LEGO display shelf, hanging on the wall as wall art.
I drilled holes in the top back corners of the box, and used a level to hang it with monkey hooks.

Their LEGO minifigures fit perfectly inside the shadow box spaces. I haven’t yet, but want to hot glue these LEGO minifigure display bases to each box, so that there’s no danger of the minifigures falling off, but so far so good even without the bases.

The boys have enjoyed displaying their favorites, and I’ve noticed that they swap the figures every now and then.
I’m assuming their “favorites” change often.
Pin Now to Remember Later

And now for more thrifty goodness!

I love this idea! My kids went through a Lego phase and would have loved this.
So cute. My boys would have loved this when they were younger
I would have NEVER known this wasn’t galvanized metal had I not seen the before! This is so great!
Now, this is just amazing. I never would have thought it was a Ghiradelli box when I first saw it. It looks spectacular now.
Molly this is incredible! I would never guess that was made out of a chocolate box. My oldest son is also LEGO figure obsessed and would love one of these! 🙂
Such a cute makeover! I never would have thought to use a chocolate box for legos. So creative!!
I love this idea, I still can’t believe its a candy box! My kids love the LEGO mini figurines even more then LEGOS, they love those grab bags. We are now collecting the LEGO Movie 2 Characters.
I never in a million years would have guessed this started as a candy box! Awesome!
This is such a cool idea and would be perfect for my son too! I’ll be on the lookout for a chocolate box now!
At first sight I thought it was metal, how cool is that?! My two daughters love Lego so that would be great for them as well
This is so cute! There are so many different things you can store in there.. but love it for lego!!
