Easy DIY Homemade Spongebob Barnacle Boy Costume

September 9, 2015 by Molly

Between Homecoming and Halloween, my teenagers have concocted some silly costumes over the years. Last year, for Character Day during Homecoming week, my son went as Barnacle Boy from Spongebob. His buddy went as Mermaid Man, and I wish I had a photo of them together, they were hilarious! Unfortunately, my iPhone got dropped and broken before I uploaded my photos from October. I’m still kicking myself for losing the photos and not backing them up. But I won’t stay on that sad subject.
Instead, I pulled what photos I could find from my Instagram and Facebook pages to share his DIY costume with you.

Who is Barnacle Boy?
Any Spongebob fan will know (and according to Wiki) he’s the undercredited and underappreciated younger sidekick of Mermaid Man. Grumpy and slightly ill-tempered, Barnacle Boy is notable for his brooding, moody disposition and exasperation with his partner’s absentminded behavior as a result of old age, and even into his golden years, Barnacle Boy is still treated in a juvenile fashion, coddled in an infantile way.

To make your own, here’s what you’ll need:

  • A white sailor hat (here’s a US Sailor Hat, but they’re easily found this time of year at party supply stores)
  • Clear utility goggles
  • Blue handkerchief or bandanna
  • Blue rubber work gloves (like these Mr. Clean gloves)
  • Long sleeve red shirt
  • Black shorts
  • Blue knee-high socks (like these solid blue baseball socks)

*Blue shoes are optional, but they do look awesome if you can find a pair

*Don’t forget to use a yellow sharpie or paint pen, or even just paint, to paint Barnacle Boy’s ring onto the glove.

This such a fun post. I needed this two nights ago when my granddaughter had to dress up like the girls dressed in the 80's
